MMGA WARMS UP FOR 2015 MESQUITE CUP

Tuesday at Falcon Ridge 36 players teed it up and played nine holes of match play and nine holes of  two man best ball.  Hopefully the results bold well for the upcoming competition at the end of this month at the Canyons and Falcon Ridge.  Seven players shot the following rounds of 73, 74, 74,75,76,78,79. And one of their best players wasn’t in that group.  Dave Jordan shot 36-38 while his playing partner Jason Richmond reversed that recording a 38-36.  J.P. LaLiberte  was one shot back shooting the best nine hole score of even par 35 on the front and a decent 40 on the back.  Jon Hawkins was one shot back of LaLiberte with his own round of 36-40-76.  Paul LeVan with 78 and newcomer Jeff Hoyt had a fine round of 38-41-79.  In addition, the forward tee players made a much needed statement that they two were tuning up for the Cup led by Ken Ward’s spectacular round of 73 recording six birdies that included circles on 10,11, 14,15, and 16.  And the back side is supposed to be the monster side.  Great round Mr. Ward!  Speaking of his birdie on the par five 16th, his teammates, Tom Durenberger, Ben Bishop and Aaron Kennard all “four” scored birdie fours.  Ray Rodgers shot his best 18 holes in a few years scoring 39-43-82 well below his handicap of 23.  The hole of the day was made by Ed Hoepfner on the par four 6th.  From his tee shot in the middle of the fairway he pulled his approach shot to the green to the left bouncing off the cart path and landing down in the deep hole in front of the 7th tee.  A blind 40 yd shot from there landed on the green and he made a eight foot putt for a remarkable par four.  Hat’s off to you Ed!

HAWKINS TAKES ADVANTAGE OF YEH’S SABATICAL

Now that Andrew Yeh has taken his annual trip to New York,  I don’t why , unless he misses the snow, it is anyone’s chance to win medalist.  Today, at the Palms Jon Hawkins was the first to take advantage of Yeh’s absence and shot a pair of 38’s to win low.  Just two shots back Paul LeVan continues to play well and scored 38-40-78.  His playing partner Neil Hendricks was one back of  LeVan as he shot 40-39-79.  Dan Trower has also been playing well as of late and today managed a smooth 82 for first place low net with a big 62.  Great round Dan!  Don Mannon also had a nice round of 40-41-81 second low net honors with 67.  Tied for third were Hendricks and Lew Roney (81) at 68.  Hendricks won third when he shot par on the first handicap hole and then birdied the 18th.  One shot back of Roney was John Sabraw (92) and a net 69.  Three players, Lyle Warner (91), Willie Nelson (88), and Glade Flanigan (91) were tied for the last payoff slot.  Warner did the right thing when he parred the first hole and won that sixth spot.  The other two bogeyed the 4th hole.  Warner was lucky it didn’t have to go to the 18th hole because he would have lost with his triple bogey.

The next scheduled play is on Tuesday, Feb 17 at Falcon Ridge at 8:00 and Thursday Feb 19 at the Canyons at 8:30.  Always check your sign up sheets for any corrected times or places.  Anyone interested in joining the MMGA can call 702-346-6363.  Also check out our website at www.mesquitemensgolf.com.
