Saturday, February 1, Mesquite Police Dispatch received a call from a motorist traveling on I-15 regarding a reckless driver who was possibly impaired.  Mesquite Police Officers located the reckless vehicle as it exited the interstate onto Pioneer Blvd in Mesquite.  The police officers were able to conduct a traffic stop and begin a DUI investigation with the driver.  While the officers were investigating the incident, the driver attempted to put multiple pills into his mouth and flee the scene on foot.  After a struggle with the driver, the police officers were able to safely take the driver into custody.  The officers subsequently searched the driver and his vehicle and located heroin, prescription medications, and drug paraphernalia.

Due to the driver having swallowed an unknown amount of drugs and medication while he was attempting to flee from the police officers, he was immediately transported to Mesa View Regional Hospital for an evaluation.  After being medically evaluated, the driver was transported and booked into the Clark County Detention Center.

The driver, Las Vegas resident James Michael Cruz, 35, was charged with felony possession of a controlled substance (heroin), felony possession of a controlled substance for sales, felony possession of a schedule IV controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, and resisting arrest.
