Virgin Valley High School Lady Dawgs had no answer for the full press defense from the Cowboys from Chaparral High School Wednesday night in the Dawg House as they were trampled by the Cowboys 51-33. Chaparral came into the battle for second place in 1-A Sunrise League play with a record of 8-2 to the Bulldogs 9-2. When the dust cleared, Chaparral took over second only one game behind Boulder City. Second place in league is important as the first two teams host playoff games. Leading the Dawgs, Kourtney Metzger had 11 points and seven block shots and Spencer Green with 15 points, ten coming from the free throw line. The Dawgs managed only 8 field goals for 16 points and went 17-32 from the free throw line. The Bulldogs seemed to lose their focus attempting to play run-run offense with the Cowboys and committed 27 turnovers in the game.

The Cowboys led 14-6 after one period and 24-14 at the break. The Bulldogs cut the Cowboys lead to 30-22 behind six quick points from Metzger but lost the momentum as Metzger went down with an ankle injury. Smelling blood, the Cowboys increased their pressure and dominated the boards increasing their lead to 36-23 after three periods. Metzger returned midway through the last period to no avail as the Bulldogs could manage only one goal from the field. Green went 7-12 in the last period scoring nine of her game high 15 points. “It was a disappointing loss, said Bulldog coach Chimane Creer, especially after Boulder City’s upset at the hands of Desert Pines.” There are times when we don’t know what we’re doing. We need to create more turnovers and get others into the game.”

The Bulldogs have two important league games remaining prior to the playoffs. They travel to Desert Pines on Tuesday in a must win game against the Jaguars before hosting league leading Boulder City on Thursday. The Eagles host Chaparral on Tuesday before coming to Virgin Valley. The plot thickens but the results will be clear after next week.
