The Virgin Valley High School wrestling team scored heavily in the lower weight classes Saturday morning in Boulder City but fell to Pahrump 239.5 to 195.5. Placing third were the host Eagles. Pahrump won three of the heaviest weight classes to secure the win. The Bulldogs trailed after prelims and quarters on Friday to both the Trojans and Eagles but surpassed the Eagles on Saturday for a second place finish.

Bulldog Ty Smith wrestling at 106 Lbs. started the ball rolling for the Dawgs pinning his opponent in 1:11 minutes of the first round. Last year’s state champion Jacob Baird placed second in the 113 Lb. class. Juan Dominguez won by major decision and will defend his state championship at 120 Lbs. next week in Winnemucca. Cash Crandall could not repeat last week’s win over the Eagles’ Collin Cox and placed third at 126 Lbs. Domingo Ramirez added more points for the Dawgs taking a second place finish at 132 Lbs. Bulldog Brock Smith wrestling at 160 Lbs. pinned his opponent in 1:14 minutes of the first round giving the Dawgs the lead in the standings. Cache Burnside gave the Dawgs their last points of the meet placing third at 170 Lbs. The Dawgs will send Ty Smith, Baird, Dominguez, Crandall, Ramirez, Brock Smith and Burnside to the state tournament. Winnemucca’s strong defending champion, Lowery High School, will again be favored to retain their title.
