Residents in the area of Turtleback Road and Pioneer Boulevard, near the United Methodist Church, Sunday may have awoken to the sound of a crash and several people yelling.
According to police reports, at approximately 3:42 a.m. Sunday morning, police responded to a possible rollover. Upon arrival, officers found a 2014 Chevrolet Cruze with Utah plates at the scene, on the grass hill south of West Pioneer Boulevard. Damages to the vehicle suggested that there was a head-on collision and the resting position of the vehicle indicated that the vehicle had been traveling eastbound.
The engine compartment was also on fire, as officers observed flames that were shooting about six feet into the air. Mesquite Fire and Rescue also responded, extinguishing the fire. No occupants were inside the vehicle, who are believed to have fled the scene prior to officers’ arrival.
A witness, whose backyard has a clear view of the scene, told officers that the people who had been standing outside of the vehicle after impact left with other vehicles.
The police report also states that the impact of the crash sent debris in several directions up to 615 feet from the vehicle.
After the initial investigation, officers had B&B Towing respond to clean up the wreckage and transport the vehicle to the impound lot. The investigation is still ongoing. Anyone with information may contact the Mesquite Police Department at 702-346-5262.
According to Bill Tanner, the city’s Public Works Director, the costs to repair the landscaping will be picked up/paid for by the Canyon Crest HOA. The other repairs for the light poles will be at the cost of the city, but only between $6,000 and $10,000. “One of the poles will need a new base, and I believe the other will only need a new head,” said Tanner.
A closer look at the scene reveals the vehicle’s marks on the sidewalk that leads to it’s final resting spot on the grass hill on the other side of the intersection.

**Update as of 1/27/25 at 8:43 a.m.: Mesquite Police have released the following information in regards to this accident:
“The driver of the vehicle involved in the accident on Pioneer and Turtleback, Shane Burks, was located and received citations for the following: damage to property, due care, duty to stop at accident, open container, and speeding. Burks’ vehicle was covered with insurance and those parties whose property was damaged where given said insurance information.”
What a coincidence. Just shortly after I quit hearing the bass music from the night club up the street.
We all know that Utah drivers all drive way too fast, although it’s usually on the freeway. This looks to be a person who came to our town to drink and party at the night club. Also appears they got a slap on the hand for what was surely strong case of DUI.
