Summer Business Institute Application Period Begins Feb. 2

Beginning Monday, Feb. 2, qualifying high school students can apply online for paid summer internships through Clark County’s popular Summer Business Institute Program (SBI).

“During the past 18 years, hundreds of students have learned valuable on-the-job skills during their summer break thanks to SBI,” Commissioner Lawrence Weekly said. “SBI is a wonderful opportunity for teenagers in our community.”

Clark County’s Human Resources Department will make applications available on its website from Feb. 2 through Feb. 27. Applications must be submitted online no later than 5 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 27. No paper applications will be distributed or accepted.

SBI is a partnership between Clark County, the Clark County School District and more than 80 area businesses. To be eligible to apply for the 2015 program, students must be sophomores, juniors or seniors with a minimum 2.0 grade point average. The program, now entering its 19th year, offers eight-week internships in fields ranging from law and medicine to architecture and education. Teen participants gain work experience and on-the-job business mentoring as part of the program.

Students requiring assistance completing the application online may contact their local high school counselor’s office or Clark County Human Resources Department at (702) 455-4565. County staff will select 110 Clark County students for the program, which runs from mid-June through mid-August. Participants are paid $8.25 an hour to work eight-hour days Monday through Thursday. On Fridays, interns attend seminars and workshops to receive training on topics such as life skills and personal finance and to participate in a civic engagement project.

90 percent of Nevada consumers who signed up for coverage through the Health Insurance Marketplace are getting financial assistance to lower monthly premiums

As the Feb. 15 deadline approaches, HHS encourages consumers to enroll in a quality, affordable coverage through the Marketplace

As the Feb. 15 deadline to sign up approaches, HHS is encouraging Nevada consumers to check out their options for quality affordable coverage through the Health Insurance Marketplace. As of Jan. 16, 52,498 Nevada consumers selected or were automatically reenrolled in Marketplace coverage. According to a report with additional details released today by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, of the 52,498 consumers in Nevada who selected or were automatically reenrolled in plans:

90 percent selected a plan with financial assistance and
34 percent were under 35 years of age.
“We’re pleased that in Nevada, 52,498 people are signed up for Marketplace coverage, and 90 percent are able to lower their costs even further by getting tax credits, making a difference in the lives of so many families,” HHS Secretary Sylvia M. Burwell said. “The deadline to sign up for coverage is just a few weeks away. We are encouraging Nevada consumers to visit HealthCare.gov, call the call center or get in touch with a local assister to check out their options for quality, affordable coverage. We still have a lot of work to do before February 15, but are encouraged by the strong interest we’ve seen so far.”

Nationwide, 9.5 million consumers selected or were automatically reenrolled in quality, affordable health insurance coverage through the Marketplace through Jan 16. More than 7.1 million were in the 37 states, including Nevada, using the HealthCare.gov platform and 2.4 million were in the 14 states (including Washington, D.C.) using their own Marketplace platforms.

Open Enrollment in the Marketplace runs from Nov. 15, 2014, through Feb. 15, 2015. Consumers should visit HealthCare.gov to review and compare health plan options.
