The Virgin Valley High School boy basketball team traveled south on Friday night to Las Vegas, then headed north to Panaca, for a Saturday evening game. The weekend had mixed results for the hometown Bulldogs as they were crushed in Las Vegas by Desert Pines 64-41 and held off small school Lincoln County 45-36. Leading the Dawgs in scoring for the weekend games was reserve Andrew Memmott with nine points against the Jaguars and 13 points versus the Lynx.

The Bulldogs were able to stay with the Desert Pines Jaguars in the first period trailing 11-8. It was a different story in the second and third periods as they were outscored 21-8 and 21-5 and trailed 53-21 after three. The Dawgs outscored the Jaguars 20-11 in the last period to make the final score 64-41. The Bulldogs had no answer for Jaguar guards Capri Uzan who had 24 points and Coby Myles with 12 plus five steals. The Dawgs shot only 33 % from the field and managed only three offensive boards. The loss dropped the Dawgs to 3-3 in league play tied with Sunrise Mountain for the final playoff spot in Sunrise League play. The Dawgs travel to 2-4 Boulder City on Wednesday, January 21 and host TECH on Friday in two must-wins for the Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs never trailed in Saturday’s matchup with Lincoln County, riding a 19-5 first period advantage the rest of the way for the win. The Dawgs led 28-14 at the break but were outscored 22-17 in the final two periods as Bulldog coach Sean FitzSimons used all his players. The win gave the Dawgs a 7-10 season record.
