GAS Club finishes 2014 play

Monday’s GAS Club proved to be another close race between the players as the top three teams finished just 1.4 strokes apart. All of them had the same story, however, of a missed putt on a hole. One team had an extra man, allowing the rest of the teams to draw names for a fifth score on their final cards.

“The handicaps really came into play in this format,” said Jim Buttler, a GAS Club organizer.

Taking one score on the par fives, two on par fours and three on par threes, the winning team of Sid Bounds, Terry Spriggs, Ben Bishop and Bill Losh picked up John Meyer for their fill-in player and got the margin they needed to seal the win. “Meyer helped that team by three shots,” said Buttler.

Low net went to Ray Sweat, and it could have been a larger margin except for putting.

Closest to the pin winners will attest to that. Larry Mierisch took hole #2 and Sweat took the last two on holes #5 and #8.

Only one skin was awarded, and that was to Buttler on hole #3.

The GAS Club Eclectic Tournament is over for 2014, a tough one to win as the two scores that tied for first place (21) were 14 under par. Five other players were just a stroke back. “Congrats to Losh and Mierisch for their great play for the year,” said Buttler.

The next Mesquite Challenge at Falcon Ridge Golf Course, 1024 Normandy Lane, will be on Monday, January 19 beginning at 9 a.m.

Anyone interested in joining the two-person tournament should contact Buttler at 702-346-2714 or Brian Wursten at 702-346-6363.

“Merry Christmas to all the great linksters that live here in Mesquite,” concluded Buttler.
