Things I Am Thankful For

Pastor BillDuring the Thanksgiving holiday, we focus on our blessings and express our gratitude to God for them. However, thanks should be on our lips every day. We can never say thank you enough to parents, friends, leaders, and especially to God. When thanksgiving becomes an integral part of our lives, we will find that our attitude toward life will change. We will become more positive, gracious, loving and humble.

The first Thanksgiving in America was celebrated by Pilgrims in 1621. The celebration came as a recommendation so the Pilgrims could focus on the good things and not the bad things. President Lincoln declared a National Day of Thanksgiving in 1863. But long before Thanksgiving was a day, it was given to us by God as a responsibility and an exercise of obedience.

Thanksgiving is an amazing medicine. When we are thankful our worries cease, complaining disappears, and peace comes into our hearts. The children of Israel had special days of thanksgiving when they would come before the Lord and express their gratitude and appreciation of Him. The Jewish hymnbook was the psalms. “We are to enter his courts with praise and with thanksgiving.”

Thanksgiving is scattered throughout the Bible. It is connected with both prayer and praise.

Thanksgiving is a time to count our blessings and give thanks to God!
Everyday should be thanksgiving, but praise God for this day each year, that reminds us to take a day for special thanks to our God.

So, as we celebrate Thanksgiving, let me share with you some things that I am thankful for.

I am so thankful for Jesus Christ! He was willing to leave heaven to come to this earth to experience pain, shame and disgrace! I am thankful for Him shedding His blood for me and taking my place on Calvary!

I am thankful for his free gift of Salvation! “Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift!” 2 Corinthians 9:15. This is a gift too wonderful for words.

Salvation means that we are set free from the guilt of sin! All of our past is forgiven. Salvation comes by faith and is offered to all!

I am thankful for the Bible! “It is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path.” Psalm 119:105. It guides me through this dark world! It gives me strength when I am weak! It brings me comfort and joy when I’m sad! I could not survive without it!

I am thankful for family! “Every time I think of you I give thanks to God.” Philippians 1:3. Family has a very special place in our hearts. Yet, so many times, we take our family for granted! Are we aware that if we die tomorrow, the company that we work for could easily replace us in a matter of days?

However, the family we left behind will feel the loss for the rest of their lives!
Life is too short for families not to get along! Let your family know now how much they mean to you! You won’t have them around forever!

This is Thanksgiving week, and we have so much to be thankful for, I have mentioned only a few. How thankful are you?

May you experience the joy of salvation and have a new realization this Thanksgiving season of all that you have to be thankful for.
