To the Editor:
Veterans Day was this week, a day that a grateful nation gives thanks to those men and women who went to war on our behalf. We are also giving thanks to those who still leave their families and travel far from home to defend our freedom, our nation and its subjects.
Last week our city cancelled the Veterans Day Parade due to inclement weather.
Many people who worked long and hard to decorate floats and prepared for the parade were sent home.
One of those floats sent home was one decorated by the Mesquite Elks Lodge #2811 Ladies who spent a lot of time and energy planning and decorating their float in the old Oasis parking terrace.
At 9 a.m. the float pulled by a beautifully restored tractor made its way down Old Mill Road, driven by a local Korean War Veteran. On the float were six fearless and proud ‘mature’ ladies who were soon soaked to the skin.
Our disappointment was hard, but we were happy to support our veterans, even in such cold and dreadful weather.
How grateful were we to honor our vets and how fortunate is our nation, to have so many young men and women fighting for us today. Fighting for the ‘Land of the free and the Home of the Brave’ – in rotten weather and unbelievable conditions.
