MLN-BDESnov13-14There’s always something to look forward to for the eaglets that fly to Beaver Dam Elementary School each day.  Looking back on childhood school days, it’s often the special occasions, or small kindnesses, that are remembered.  Rare is the person who specifically remembers studying long division or pronouns!  Field trips, special assemblies, and individual awards always seem to find a significant spot in one’s memory of childhood.  There are many such opportunities for memories to be made at Beaver Dam Elementary School.  One that is looked forward to each month is the opportunity to open the Mystery Door.

Only students who have attended school every day the month are able to have their names put into the bucket for the drawing.  Even with the flu season going full swing, almost two hundred names were up for the drawing in October.  A hushed silence fell over the student body as top eagle, Mrs. Phyllis Leavitt, brought a sixth grade student up to draw the lucky name.

Cheers abounded as fifth grader Joseph Curtis’ name was drawn.  Readers may remember this outstanding young man who was recently recognized in the AcKIDemic Spotlight for his outstanding citizenship and scholarship.  Although Mrs. Leavitt promised the envelope she held contained money, it was the door that piqued Curtis’ curiosity.  When it opened, he found himself the recipient of more gumballs than he can probably chew in his lifetime! It’s lucky for him that he’s got many friends and siblings who can help him consume the prize.

Next month students will be working on perfect attendance and hoping to be able to see what could be hiding behind the Mystery Door.  Perhaps one day they will tell their own children about how each day at Beaver Dam Elementary School brought both learning and fun into their daily activities.
