The Virgin Valley High School Lady Bulldogs soccer team defeated the Sunrise Mountain High School Miners 2-0 Thursday afternoon in a makeup game to clinch the second seed in Tuesdays Southern Division 1-A playoffs. The Dawgs needed an outright win, not a tie with the Miners, to insure their placing in the tournament. The win reversed a 2-0 loss to the Miners in early October. The win, is the seventh in a row for the streaking Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs record now stands at 9-2-3 in league play and 12-5-5 overall. The twelve wins are a school record for Lady Dawg soccer.

Abbie Barnum hit a goal in each of the two periods, one on a blocked shot and the other on an assist from Kallie Graves. They were the 32nd and 33rd of the season for Barnum. Goalkeeper Spencer Green had seven saves for her fifth shutout in a row and 10+ for the season. “We came out a little nervous to start the game,” said Bulldog coach Bob Snell. “Barnum’s second goal was an amazing shot. Our defense stepped up and had their fifth shutout in a row. The teams in the other league, including Clark, are tough.”

The Dawgs will now face Clark High School of the Sunset league Tuesday night, November 4, at Faith Lutheran High School in Las Vegas. The match is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.

The Chargers finished Sunset League play with an 8-5-1 record good enough for third place.

The Chargers are led by Darian Gambetta who has 23 goals for the season.
