It was a long Wednesday night for volleyball fans from Moapa and the Virgin Valley’s as their respective teams battled for five games before a winner was crowned. The Pirates and the Bulldogs traded wins at two apiece before the Pirates won the fifth set 15-11.

The Pirates won the first set 25-19. The Ladies were up 3-0 behind the service of Janella Fiso but couldn’t hold the lead as the Pirates rallied to lead 5-4 and would never trail the rest of the way. The Dawgs could not stop the Pirates tall front line.

The Lady Bulldogs began the second match with more enthusiasm behind Emma Barnum and Bernice Fiso. The score was 8-8 before the Dawgs outscored the Pirates 13-6 to lead 21-14. The Dawgs held off the Pirates and won 25-20. Bernice Fiso had two kills and two blocks followed by Barnum with two kills.

The third match was all Pirates as they led from start to finish with the final score 25-16. The Bulldogs had four service errors in the match and could not sustain a rally.

The fourth match of the evening found the Dawgs reversing the third game score winning 25-16. It was one of the Bulldogs best matches of the season as they dominated to take a 23-6 lead to the pleasure of the Bulldog faithful. The Pirates would not run away and hide as they ran off 10 straight service points to close within 23-16. Bernice Fiso finished the Pirates off with an ace in match point. Bernice Fiso and Barnum again led the Dawgs in kills and blocks.

The Bulldogs seemed to have the last and short match under control with a lead of 8-4 but the Pirates would rally to tie the match at 10-10 before outscoring the Dawgs 5-1 to end the match. Bernice Fiso had 10 kills followed by Barnum with 12 kills. Janella Fiso led the Dawgs with 22 assists.

The Dawgs’ league record fell to 1-1 and 5-7 overall.They will travel to Boulder City on Tuesday September 23 before returning on September 29 hosting Del Sol High School.
