Daily school attendance is important because making up lessons is never the same as being in class when a lesson is presented.  Students who develop a habit of regular attendance will be workers who are conscientious about coming to their jobs regularly.  These are just two reasons why top eagle, Phyllis Leavitt, encourages students to attend school daily at Beaver Dam and why the Mystery Door incentive has been developed.

During the recent flooding it was “business as usual” for the eaglets of Beaver Dam, and almost every one managed to fly to the nest for school that rainy day!  Students got caught up in the planned activities and didn’t mind dealing with some wet weather in the process.

The Mystery Door opens to one lucky student each month.  The only requirement for getting one’s name in the hat to be drawn is that the student doesn’t miss a single day of school.  The student selected, among the many names in the hat, for the month of August was second grader Benito Warren.

When given the choice between an envelope and its contents or being able to see what was behind the Mystery Door, he jumped at the opportunity to open the door.  It was a wise choice because behind that door was the biggest stuffed hippopotamus that has ever been seen in the Beaver Dam area!  In fact, it was almost bigger than Benito!

He was delighted with his prize and eager to talk about the contest.  He described himself as “very excited because I’ve never, ever been chosen before.”  When asked what his favorite part of school is, his prompt reply was “recess”!  Benito and his twin brother, Elijah, have their mom, Mrs. Biasi, as their teacher this year.  Benito likes that but says “sometimes Mom gets a little mean in order to get the kids to listen.”  Obviously both Benito and Elijah have listened and learned that school attendance is important, and Benito’s got the Mystery Door prize to prove it.

Another monthly honor which is given at Beaver Dam is the Student of the Month award.  Each award has a virtuous theme.  This month’s theme was friendliness.  What a neat way to begin the school year, focusing on making new friends and learning how to be a good friend!  Mrs. Trenholm’s fourth grade class gave a dramatic presentation on friendship during the flag ceremony.  Then the classroom awards were given.  Students honored for friendship were:  Justice Yanez and Manuel Castillo (kindergarten), Alectra Jackson (first grade), Gabriela Lopez and Brooklyn Bulinski (second grade), Alexia DeSantiago (third grade), Juliana Martinez and Jacie Leavitt (fourth grade), Taggert Reber (fifth grade), and Miguel Kieyoani (sixth grade).

Alexander Eagle, mascot and protector of Beaver Dam Elementary School, joins the entire faculty and staff in honoring the Students of the Month with a two-feather salute for their recognition of being good friends!
