TUESDAY –
JOHNSON SHAVES CANYONS GOLF COURSE

With only a few hours left before the Canyons golf course closed for over seeding the MMGA teed it up on the very shaven dry grass course.  It appeared to have bothered a lot of the players as only one person broke 80.  That may have been the fact that Sterling Johnson works at that course and had all the inside information on how to play those short fairways and greens.  He shot a 39-40-79 for medalist over Tom Durenberger’s 80 and two shots better than Andrew Yeh, Dave Jordan and Bill Irace at 81.  Durenberger must have also found the secret to the shaven greens, though a little late in his round, as he recorded even par on  the  last 12 holes with three bogeys and three birdies.  Dan Trower (85), from the forward tees, had the best net score at 66 and Durenberger net 67 followed by Jim Anderson (91) and 68.

THURSDAY –
SWAYNE WINS IN CLOSE CONTEST OVER JORDAN AND LE VAN
The over seeding has begun and the MMGA have started their Sept traveling schedule to St George.  Today it was Coral Canyon where Dick Swayne (77), Dave Jordan (78) and Paul Le Van were paired up and did battle until the last hole.  After the first nine Le Van, aided by two birdies recorded an one under par 35.  Jordan was four shots back at 39 and Swayne five back at 40.  Swayne, after parring the last three holes on the front was ready to make a charge.  He birdied the first two holes and was one over after sixteen.  He then made his third birdie of the side on 17.  He would bogey 18 for a great comeback one over par 37 for a total 77.  Jordan played steady with a pair of 39’s for his final 78.  LeVan was only one over for the day after 14.  His potentially great round was spoiled with a nine on the par five 18th.  Great rounds of golf gentlemen it was fun watching it.   J P Laliberte went to the far back tees to play with Andrew Yeh and did very well with a score of 40-39-79. And was rewarded with first place low net with 69.  Le Van had the shot and hole of the day.  On the 363yd up hill par four 4th hole his drive ended up in the muddy bunker some 160yds from the green.  His second shot landed just four feet from the cup where he finished it off in style with a birdie three.  Nice sandy, birdie Paul!  You had another great hole but I can’t remember which hole.

The next scheduled play is on Tuesday, Sept 9th at the Ledges at 9:00 and Thursday, Sept 11th at 9:00 at Sky Mt.  Always check your sign up sheets for any corrected times or places.  Anyone interested in joining the MMGA can call 346-6363.  Also check out our website at www.mesquitemensgolf.com.

The MMGA “Fed Ex” summer net tournament came to an end on the casablanca golf course on August 28.

Manny Lira, despite finishing last on the 28th in pts manated to hang on and win the net handicap tournament by 119 pts over Dave Jordan.  Jordan battled Lira all summer but the huge difference in handicap eventually wore Jordan down.  Dan Trower and Don Mannon battled all summer for the third spot which Trower held on to win.  The fifth place was won by Terry Gardner by just 20 pts over Andrew Yeh.  The 11th spot that Ben Bishop won by only 6 pts over Sterling Johnson.  And even the last place was a 4 pt difference where Jim Anderson nudged out Clark Mitchell.  All those short putts that were missed over the 12 weeks meant a lot  to players and their final standings.
