The Chaparral High School Cowboys depth prevailed Monday afternoon, in scorching temperatures, to defeat the Virgin Valley High School Bulldog boy’s soccer team 4-1. It was a hard-fought match despite the score as the Dawgs gave up two goals in the closing minutes to the Cowboys.

The Cowboys hit goal first at the five minute mark on Omar Miranda’s shot through a packed Bulldog defense. Defense prevailed for the next 17 minutes before Bulldog Gabe Medina blasted a free kick past the Cowboy goalkeeper to tie the match at 1-1. The heat began to take its toll as the referees allowed substitution breaks to keep fresh players on the field. Cowboy Jose Morales got the lead back on a goal at the 28 minute mark through a confused Bulldog defense.  The first half ended with the Cowboys on top 2-1.

During the halftime break, Bulldog coach Mike Pletzke explained to his team, “We can’t make mistakes; we need to play smart. They’re hunkered down on defense we need to be methodical in our offense. We’re controlling the middle of the field and don’t stop until you hear the whistle.”

The Bulldogs dodged a bullet five minutes into the second half as the Cowboys missed a penalty shot in the box. The Dawgs controlled the tempo for the next 15 minutes shooting four corner kicks but could not finish. The Cowboys put the match out of reach hitting two more goals, one each by Morales and Miranda to end the match.

The Bulldogs’ season record dropped to 2-2-2 and 0-1 in Sunrise League play. The Dawgs’ next match is Wednesday, September 17 at home against Desert Pines.
