Fall Leagues forming

The City of Mesquite is currently taking team registration for all adult leagues. Registrations must be made in person at the Department of Athletics & Leisure Services Administrative Offices, located at 100 West Old Mill Road. Registration is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Please be aware that you may only register one team and that no spots will be held over the phone. We cannot hold checks or cash for any reason, so please have your sponsor’s or personal check when registering.

Adult Co-ed Softball Fall League begins September 16, 2014. (Games played on Tuesday Nights) League includes a 12-14 games schedule (depending on the amount of teams signed up), and a post-season tournament.  Modified USSSA co-ed rules apply; players must be 16 or older to participate. Deadline to register a team is September 2, 2014 (Men will use wood bats and Women will use composites).

Tim’s Pickleball Tournament in 2 weeks

For the first time there will be an indoor pickleball tournament at the Mesquite Recreation Center. The Athletics and Leisure Services Department will set up 6 courts inside the Recreation Center facility for pickleball play. The festivities will be from 2 – 6 p.m. on Friday, August 22, 2014. Tournament registration will be from 7:30 – 8 a.m. on Saturday morning, August 23, 2014. Tournament play will start at 8 a.m. The Recreation Center Gyms will be closed at those times due to the tournament

AGE GROUPS:

Adult (18+, 35+, 50+, and 55+…): age is determined by the younger age of the two partners.

SKILL GROUPS: Based on USAPA skill groups: 2.5, 3.0, 3.5, 4.0, 4.5 & 5.0, The team’s skill level is determined by the higher skill level of the two partners. Please visit www.usapa.org for definitions.

RULES: Current USAPA rules will govern play. Please visit www.gcsgpickleball.org for additional rules and information. All players must referee or provide a replacement to referee for themselves (one match per event entered).

FORMAT OF PLAY: Double Elimination. If there are fewer than 4 entries in a group, groups may be combined. Age groups with 14 or more entries may be divided in separate groups based on player skill levels and recommendations from the seeding committee. Skill groups will not be divided. Groups may be combined or cancelled if insufficient entries. There is a fee please inquire with the Recreation Center front desk.

Wear comfortable clothing; gym shoes (non-marking soles) bring a sweat towel, and a bottle of water. There are fees included to participate in the tournament, please inquire on these with the Recreation Center, they ask that you pre-register for the tournament. Registrations for Sunshine Academy open now

New student registrations have begun for the Sunshine Academy pre-school classes for 3 to 5-year-olds are now being accepted by The Leisure Services Department.

“Our program is designed to meet the needs and wants of both participants and parents. Activities are supervised, organized, diversified, and safe,” said Janeece Noel, Recreation & Parks Department Lead Instructor. “We know that we are helping to shape future leaders, teachers, mothers, and fathers and we take pride in the quality of our program. We incorporate fun, education, exploration, social interaction, and play. We believe that every child is important, and strive to include each and every child in our programs,” Noel added.

There are a few items that all children participating in the Sunshine Academy program, will need a copy of their birth certificate, immunizations records, and physical from their physician and must be potty-trained and the appropriate age to participate in the academy program.

Youth Fall Flag Football registration

Youth Fall Flag Football is scheduled to begin September 15, 2014, for boys and girls age 4 – 8 years old.  The deadline to register is August 24, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. Organized practices will be on Monday evenings and games will be played on Wednesday evenings.

If spots are available after the registration deadline, those wanting to fill the available positions will be charged a late sign-up fee per spot.  Spots will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

“The purpose of youth programs in the City of Mesquite Recreation & Parks Department is to guide boys and girls through an organized program,” said Zach Robison, Recreation Coordinator. “Youth can learn the fundamentals of a sport and learn sportsmanship through participation. The ultimate goal is to encourage skill development and foster a positive attitude.”
