MMGA Update Aug. 29, 2014

TUESDAY  –  JORDAN  –  LE VAN  BEAT  YEH  —  REILLY  – ANDERSON  SHINE NET

Andrew Yeh had not played golf for a week and showed up at the Canyons not knowing whether their was a slot for him to play or whether he should test his ailing back.  It didn’t matter in the end because Dave Jordan finally started a match with some breakfast inside of him to help his blood sugar problems and today it really did some good.  Paul LeVan just showed up ready to play.  And play he did.  Le Van played the front side one over par 36 while Jordan was one stroke behind at 37.  Playing partner Yeh still working out the lay-off kinks was putting much to strong and made the turn at 40.  He made a valiant effort on the back nine to catch his Jordan and Le Van with eight fours and a par three on his last hole the par three 17th for a very impressive round of one under par 35 for a 75.  Jordan almost duplicated the eight fours but settled for seven but a likewise great nine hole even par 36 for 73.  Le Van “walked the walk” with the only blemish on the back a bogey for 37 and tie with Jordan at 73.  Two very solid rounds.  At the end of the day Le Van’s only bogey on the back side awarded the low gross to Jordan’s par four on the fifth handicap hole.  Ironically, on that same hole that Jordan broke the tie, he did it with the shot of the day.  He had hit his drive into the desert area on the left where he punched out a five iron 165 yds on to the center of the green for his par four.  Joel  Reilly shot a great round of 84 and a net 61 to win low net honors by four shots over  Jim Anderson.  Anderson (89) recorded a birdie on his front nine 39.  Le Van and Ben Bishop (81G) tied for third net with their 66’s.

THURSDAY – MMGA  HAS  NEW  KID  ON THE BLOCK

Tuesday at the CasaBlanca a new challenger to Andrew Yeh was discovered.  His name is J.P. Laliberte and his game is legitimate.  If you believed how hard he struggled during his round one might think he is hiding something.  But his game says otherwise.  Today he cruised around the shaving fairways of the Casa to a very nice 39-37-76 to beat his playing partner Andres Yeh by one shot.  Yea recorded a 37-40-77 with four birdies.  Ben Bishop from the forward tees almost shot his age as he turned in a very nice even par 36 on the back along with a 41 on the front for a sweet 77.  It was good enough to take low net with a 62 just beating Dan Trower (83) by one shot.  Ed Hoepfner turned in another nice round on his old home course with a 40-38-78.

The shot of the day was turned in by Bill Irace on the 197 yd par three eight hole.  You know you are having a bad day when you have four birdies and none of them are good enough for a “skin”….just ask Dick Swayne.   His five wood  landed on the green and rolled to within two inches of the cup where his playing partners made him mark his ball.

Also today the MMGA lost one of its long time members as they said good-bye and best wishes to Jerry Hyland as he moves back to Michigan.

The next scheduled play is on Tuesday, Sept 2nd at the Canyons  at 7:00 and Thursday, Sept 4th at 9:00 at CORAL CANYON.  Always check your sign up sheets for any corrected times or places.  Anyone interested in joining the MMGA can call 346-6363.  Also check out our website at www.mesquitemensgolf.com.
