After weeks of long and contentious meetings on medical marijuana, the regular Mesquite city council meeting on Tuesday lasted less than 30 minutes.
The council approved an agreement with the Golf Channel to produce feature stories and live on-site coverage of the Mesquite NV Paralong Drive Worlds Event on October 16 and 17. The agreement was made possible by a donation of $24,500 from the Eureka Casino Resort and $5,000 from Golf Mesquite. As corporate sponsors, the two organizations will assist with marketing and production expenses. The city also budgeted $5,000 for the event.
The city anticipates that Golf Channel coverage will give the community media exposure not only in the U.S. but also in the home countries of the competitors.
The council also approved an ordinance that would add “Pigeon Control” to the Municipal Code. Joe Macias, Mesquite Animal Control Officer, told the council that the amendment was needed after several citizens and businesses complained about the proliferation of pigeons in the city.
Under the ordinance, it is “Unlawful for any person to encourage the lingering, roosting and/or congregating of feral pigeons by providing food.” A person violating the ordinance could be subject to a maximum fine of not more than $1,000 and jail time not to exceed six months.
No one testified either in favor or in opposition to the measure.
In other business the council approved introducing a bill to bring the city municipal code into compliance with state statute on prohibiting retaliation against city employees who disclose improper government actions, and approved an agreement between the city and the state giving the city attorney access to the Nevada Criminal Justice Information system. The city attorney will use the information in prosecuting cases in municipal court.
