During the June Meeting of the Mesquite Lions, Bruce Allsop was named Lion of the Year.  Bruce has been a long time Lion and has been a member of the Mesquite Lions for 6 years. He has served in many capacities.  He has also been the “Lion Tamer” for the local club and participated in the many service projects. Outgoing President Judi DePew presented him with the Lion of the Year Award and also presented certificates to the outgoing Board of Directors and committee chairmen.

Karla Lupercio and her mother, Gloria Pelayo were honored at the meeting held at the home of the newly installed president Diane Steenbergen.  Karla, who graduated on June 5th from Virgin Valley High School, was awarded the Lions Jim Abbott Scholarship in the amount of $1,000 at the recent awards ceremony at VVHS.  Karla was cited for her outstanding service to the community, her ability to finish 11th in her class even though she held down a job and participated in many school activities.  Karla hopes for a degree in Business and Corporate Law and will be attending the College of Southern Nevada with the hope to transfer to University of Nevada Las Vegas in the near future.

The installation of officers for the Lions Board of Directors was also held at this meeting where Willie Fields from Las Vegas, Lions Past District Governor, served as the installing officer.

Those officers installed for 2014-2015 were:

Diane Steenbergen, President
Paula Farrell, Vice President
Helen Murchie and Bill DePew, co- secretaries
Ruth Reilly, Treasurer
Shirley Abbott, Director (1 year)
Bill DePew, Director (2 years)
Bruce Allsop, Tail Twister
Joel Reilly, Lion Tamer
Judy DePew and Helena Alexander, co-chairmen of Membership

Diane chose as her theme for the year, ACES which stands for Action, Commitment, Enthusiasm and Service.  She plans to continue the many youth projects such as the Easter Egg Hunt, Youth Speaker Contest, The Jim Abbott Scholarship, Reading program,

and helping to provide glasses for youth and adults who need financial aid, in keeping with their motto: “We Serve”.

Mr. Fields also inducted Bonnie Baracker as a new member into the Mesquite Lions Club explaining the significance of belonging to an organization which is International and allows members an opportunity to serve their communities locally, on a district or national level, and internationally as they sponsor projects affecting people worldwide.

The club has already started planning for two large events in October and November.  A Golf Tournament for blind and disabled golfers from all over the world to be held in October and the District Cabinet Meeting to be held at the Eureka Casino in November.  They recently made a contribution to the Mesquite Reading program as they continue to serve in the community wherever needed.
