| | | Routine Delivery Not So Routine By Joe Delaney 07-24-2008
| | When a big truck tangles with a power line, the power line usually never wins as seen here when a U.S. Foodservice delivery truck took on some low hanging power lines near the Mesquite Library. |
Just before noon on Wednesday July 23, a U.S. FoodService delivery truck was making his usual deliveries, and it turned out not to be so routine.
While making a right hand turn off of W. First North St. on to Arrowhead Ln, the front of the driver's trailer caught the overhead power lines pulling some of the lines away from the pole, and causing a brief power outage for several blocks.
One employee from Overton Power stated that it appeared that it was only the cable TV lines that have been pulled loose, but would not know for sure until they checked everything to be sure. [Read full story] |

| City Approves $100,000 To Lobbyist By Morris Workman 07-23-2008
| Council Denies 50-foot Walgreens Sign
Late night talk show hosts frequently joke about Washington, D.C. lobbyists paying off government officials.
In Mesquite, government officials voted to pay off a D.C. lobbyist.
The Mesquite city council voted 5-0 to approve a renewal of their contract with the Furman Group, a lobbyist which has promoted the city’s causes in Congress and in other federal agencies.
However, instead of paying off with free liquor, imported cigars, or expensive trips to exotic locales like Tonopah or Goldfield, the city plans to use cold hard cash.
Nearly $100,000. [Read full story] |

| Scooter Ticket Dropped By Morris Workman 07-23-2008
| | The scooter on the left is the one used as an example by the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles of a “legal” moped. The one on the right is the one which local resident Harold Caswell was riding in April when he was ticketed for operating an unlicensed vehicle. The City of Mesquite recently dropped the charges after the Mesquite Police Department changed the way they gauge whether or not a scooter is legal. |
The case of the rogue scooter has been dropped.
According to Harold Caswell, who was ticketed in April for riding the scooter on a city street, the charges have been dismissed by the Mesquite City Attorney’s office.
Caswell was cited for operating an unregistered vehicle, operating without a motorcycle endorsement on his license, and not having insurance on the scooter.
The potential fines for the three offenses could have totaled $965.
The controversy surrounds the definition of a scooter.
The Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles does not list “scooter” among its laws.
Instead, the DMV refers to them as “mopeds.”
NRS 486.038 defines a “moped” as a vehicle “which looks and handles essentially like a bicycle and is propelled by a small engine which produces not more than 2 gross brake horsepower and which has a displacement of not more than 50 cubic centimeters.” [Read full story] |

| VVWD Deals Exposed By Barbara Ellestad 07-22-2008
| VVWD Attorney Admits To Working For Wolf Creek
The biggest challenge to the Virgin Valley Water Board during its emergency meeting Monday morning came from its past president and former six-year member, Kraig Hafen and his legal counsel, Bo Bingham.
When the VVWD Board met to consider an offer from Southern Nevada Water Authority (SNWA) to lease shares the local water company owns in the Mesquite Irrigation Company, Hafen confronted several past actions the current Board has taken.
The VVWD currently leases 188 shares to Legacy Construction for $250 a share annually.
The lease expires Aug. 1, 2009.
VVWD leases another 150 shares to the Wolf Creek Golf Course for the same amount per year. [Read full story] |

| Deadline Expires, VVWD Turns Back On Lease Money By Barbara Ellestad 07-22-2008
| | Cresent Hardy, owner of Legacy Construction, addresses the VVWD Board of Directors during an emergency meeting held Monday. VVWD leases 188 shares it owns in the Mesquite Irrigation Company to Legacy Construction for use primarily on the Falcon Ridge Golf Course. Southern Nevada Water Authority is interested in obtaining that water at ten times the rate. “Your shares are for this valley. You’re not in the leasing business to go outside this valley,” Hardy told the board. |
Working under a 5 p.m. deadline in front of a standing-room-only crowd, the Virgin Valley Water District held an emergency meeting Monday morning to consider an offer from the Southern Nevada Water Authority (SNWA) to lease shares it holds in the Mesquite Irrigation Company.
SNWA sent a letter in May to all shareholders in the irrigation company offering to purchase or lease shares of non-potable water that Nevada’s largest water company could ship down the Virgin River to Lake Mead.
VVWD holds 338 shares in Mesquite Irrigation Company that are currently under lease to two commercial golf course operations in town.
Legacy Construction, owned and operated by former Mesquite City Council member Cresent Hardy, holds a lease for 188 shares used to water down the Falcon Ridge Golf Course.
The lease expires Aug. 1, 2009. [Read full story] |

| Nevada Attorney General To Visit Mesquite Friday (Press Release) 07-21-2008
| | Catherine Cortez Masto |
Nevada Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto will head to the southern Nevada community of Mesquite on Friday, July 25 as part of the office’s Rural Road Trip program.
The theme of the trip is “Putting Nevada’s Families First”.
“The purpose of these trips is to get out of the office and meet face-to-face with residents, to hear about their concerns and talk about what our office can do to help out,” General Masto added.
“We’d do a disservice to our rural residents if we focus our efforts just on Nevada’s urban areas. Our rural communities deserve our time and attention as well.”
Friday’s trip will begin with a visit at the Citizen’s Coffee at 9 a.m.
The time for the monthly Citizen’s Coffee, which is usually held at 7:30 a.m., has been changed. [Read full story] |
